DER HIRT AUF DEM FELSEN (The Shepherd on The Cliffs)
D. 965 (op. posth 129; October 1828 )
Wilhelm Mϋller & Helmine von Chézy
I stand on the highest cliff,
Looking down into the deep valley,
Singing:
Far across the deep dark vale
Rings out the echo
Of the cliffs.
The further I call
The clearer the echo
Below.
My loved one is so far from me,
And that is why I long for her so
Across the water.
I am so torn with grief,
My joy is quite gone,
There is no hope for me on earth,
I am so lonely here.
The song of the wood sounds so plaintive,
So plaintive it sounds in the night,
Our hearts bear it up to heaven
With miraculous power.
Spring is coming,
My friend, the Spring,
Now I am set
For wandering…
